2018 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master Joanne Brackeen was a child prodigy at the age of 11, learned to play the piano in just six months, and was performing professionally by the age of 12. Her jazz contemporaries at the time were players like Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins and Bobby Hutcherson. The Los Angeles Conservatory soon offered Brackeen a full scholarship, but within a year she realized the bandstand was more significant than the academy.

In 1965, Brackeen moved her family to New York City, where she began her career with luminaries such as George Benson, Lee Konitz and Sonny Sitt. Four years later, she joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers as the first and only woman member of the group, playing with them until 1972. Before emerging as her own bandleader, Brackeen would spend the next five years performing with Joe Henderson and Stan Getz's quartets.

Joanne's own band over the years has featured renowned musicians including New Orleans' own Terence Blanchard and Branford Marsalis, as well as Ravi Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, Eddie Gomez, Billy Hart, Horace "El Negro" Hernandez, and many more. She has recorded more than two dozen albums as a bandleader, which include 100 of her 300 personal compositions, and appears on nearly 100 other recordings. She is also presently a full time professor at Berklee College of Music, and a guest professor at the New School in NYC.

Whatever the musical setting - solo, duo, trio, quartet, quintet - pianist Joanne Brackeen's unique style of playing commands attention. In addition to her captivating and complex improvisations, she has written intricate, rhythmically daring compositions in a wide stylistic range. Tonight, Brackeen presents a New Orleans quintet for her Centennial Tribute to the music of Art Blakey.

The Joanne Brackeen Quintet tonight features:
Joanne Brackeen - piano
Herlin Riley - drums
Amina Scott - bass
Steve Lands - trumpet
Doug Douget - saxophone
